2008 "Hu Nien-Tsu Eighty-Year-Old Exhibition" in Hong Kong Public Libraries. Joint Exhibition with Olympic Fine Arts in the China International Exhibition Center. 2009 "Looking Back & Looking Ahead-Shi Niu Lao Mu The Creative Progress of Hu Nien-Tsu" will be held in National Art Museum of China in Beijing.

LANDSCAPE PAINTINGS

More importantly, he is widely praised for following the theory and aesthetic of Chinese painting; yet he can get inspiration from modern and international signs. In his works, he uses traditional "sanwei method" or "wrinkle method" to depict the texture in landscape paintings, insisting on the importance of working on the "realm before painting", "forgetting appearance once the implications are grasped", and "scholarly painting." As a result, the content of his paintings is rich and substantial. In addition, he also uses simple signs in "abstract" and "concrete" manner. Regarding the charm and color of water-ink in his painting, he can apply them in the form and substance that are recognized by society. Perhaps, we can call his style realistic or modern.

石牛老牧

湖南省益陽縣人。字號石牛老牧。1946年入南京美專就讀國畫選科,1948年師承國畫大師黃君璧,次年聘任為臺灣省立師範學院(今臺灣師範大學)藝術系助教,

並獲溥心畬指點北宋山水畫法,1959年任教於臺灣藝術專科學校(今臺灣藝術大學),後辭去教職,專職於水墨畫創作,個人繪畫資歷長達七十年以上。   


作品曾於國内外展出百餘次,畫風獨具特色,其汲取傳統繪畫之精藴,融合西方抽象表現,以蛇紋皴、灑拓法重建具現代感的東方畫作,開展潑墨、潑彩抽象之新意,

隨心馳騁於古典與現代之間。曾獲美國杜威大學獲頒榮譽藝術博士殊榮,名揚中外藝壇。

應聘任全國美展籌備委員,長流畫廊主辦灑拓法專題展、21世紀現代水墨展、被推選任臺灣水墨畫會學會第一任會長(理事長)。
應聘任國立臺灣藝術學院水墨畫專業教授,應聘任臺北市政府勞教中心才藝賽評審。

「胡氏創作重思慮、重情感、重神韻、寫意寫實,皆有物我兩忘之意境」,復於畫幅題字中抒其感想,「余作畫喜用大筆快皴,小筆慢染,快皴易得氣勢,慢染能生 韻味,此吾自法也」。

很可喜的是,胡終於由「吸收現代創作觀念」中悟了道,現在已衝破了傳統文人畫上千年的公式枷鎖,真正地覺悟到傳統筆墨的精神並非僅限制在傳統的皴法之中,傳統的皴法是死的,筆墨是活的,活的筆墨是點線面色與肌理的無限變革與延伸,不是舊有形式的重複。---劉國松

任臺灣水墨畫會理事長,並受邀參加臺灣水墨新貌大展。
作品〈蔭〉應邀參加中國北京第二屆國際美術雙年展。

2007
應邀參加臺灣創價學會2007年創價文化藝術系列,展出「心靈迴響的美感一胡念祖水墨創作展」,並出版畫集。
應邀於國立歷史博物館國家畫廊舉行「八十創作大展」並編印《八十創作大展畫集》。

胡念祖不斷的在創新一些新的技巧,若干年來,他綜合了中、西方大師們的創作觀念的啟發,他試出了一種突破傳統的技法,胡念祖認為有必要一試,並且相當的 可觀,他說:「古人寫山、石皆用傳統皴法,為披麻、解索、斧劈,余以獨家皴法,厚顏之曰『蛇紋』,蓋紋理交錯似蛇皮之紋也川不僅如此,胡念祖還極力於突顯 畫中的主景,也有新法,「余作山林初雪,每喜數加皴染,古人染雪景數用赭色,此幅我獨以青色出之,意在增添數寒氣耳。」
